Man Li (he/him) is a choral conductor and composer originally from Hong Kong and currently based in Vancouver. He currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Amabilis Singers, the Music Director of the Joyful Voice Community Choir, the founder and co-director of Vancouver Cantonese Choir and a vocal lead of Vancouver Bach Choir Symphonic Choir. He had completed a Master of Music degree in choral conducting at the University of British Columbia under the tutelage of Dr. Graeme Langager, Dr. Hyejung Jun, and Dr. Kari Turunen. Before moving to Canada, he studied choral conducting under Ms. Vivian Ip and Mr. Felix Yeung in Hong Kong. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, specializing in music composition under the tutelage of Professor Lee Wan Ki Wendy, Professor Chan Kai Young, and Dr. Lo Hau Man. He also majored in voice under the tutelage of Mr. Caleb Woo.
As a conductor, Man prioritizes building an encouraging environment rooted in artistic excellence. He is committed to fostering community within choirs through shared musical purpose, high artistic standards, and expressive communication of tone, style, and ensemble cohesion. His leadership philosophy centres on empathetic guidance, thorough preparation, and a commitment to nurturing rewarding and meaningful musical experiences.
Before relocating to Vancouver,, Man was the president of Chung Chi Choir and the conductor of the student choir of CUHK music department, Aqua Voice. He was the music director of the Hong Kong vocal ensemble Cantus12, the conductor of KMYLS Junior Choir, the conductor of ELCHK Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School’s Show Choir, and the assistant conductor of Yuen Long Children’s Choir Concert Choir (awarded Gold medal in European Choir Games 2019 Grand Prix GP1). He directed UBC Treble Choir Oriana and UBC Chamber Choir during his graduate program at UBC. He has been selected as a conducting fellow for the Choral Conducting Symposium at the University of Toronto (2023), the Conductor’s Symposium of Vancouver Chamber Choir (2024), the Cascade Conducting Choral Masterclass (2024), the Eastman Choral Masterworks Conducting Masterclass (2025), and the Phoenix Chamber Choir Conducting Masterclass (2025). He received the EnChor Graduate Scholarship in Choral Conducting and the Cascade Choral Conducting Masterclass Scholarship.
Besides conducting, Man composes choral works mainly in the unique tonal language: Cantonese. His choral works have been performed in Canada, Hong Kong, the UK, Malaysia, and at the Taipei International Choral Festival. He has presented as a virtual presenter at the Canadian choral conference PODIUM on the topic of “Cantonese Choral Compositions: Linguistic Considerations for Singers and Conductors,” providing guidance for non-Cantonese conductors on how to approach Cantonese choral works. Man’s Cantonese choral work was featured in the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s Interplay Workshop. His contemporary choral work Synchronized(2021) has been chosen to premiere in the Bauhinia Concert 2021 and awarded as the Chung Chi College Academic Creativity Award 2021/2022.
Man is one of the board of directors of Muzewest Concerts. He is also a member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Choral Canada, Chorus America and the BC Choral Federation (BCCF).
